BrightFarms is "an urban greenhouse consultancy" whose mission is to increase consumption of whole and fresh foods by building greenhouses at or near supermarkets. So far, they've partnered with seven supermarkets chains to build sustainable hydroponic greenhouse close to or even on the rooftop of the grocery store.
And they're super efficient: a greenhouse that spans just one acre can grow up to 500,000 pounds of produce a year. This model uses no pesticides, uses 7x less water and requires 10x less land. In addition, "water is recycled through a closed loop system and there is no agricultural runoff."
