Trends & Inspiration for Updating Your Home’s Exterior

Trends & Inspiration for Updating Your Home’s Exterior

With the change of season, it’s not uncommon for people to feel like freshening up their look — whether that be their wardrobe or their home. We can’t give you any advice on stylish new fashions (acid wash jeans are still in, right?), but we can definitely offer a few words on updating your house’s exterior.

Au Naturel

What’s been really popular lately is really going with a more natural — as in “nature” — look. Rather than standing out from the natural environment, homeowners are more interested in having their house blend in with nature. This might involve landscaping, but it also takes into account the colors and textures of the exterior of the home.

Trends & Inspiration:

  • Try earth tones like brown, deep yellow, gray, cinnamon, peach, dark green

  • Use neutral stains for any wood (doors, panelling).

  • Don’t be afraid to highlight a particular part of your house, like the front door or window frames, or an interesting part of the architecture.

  • Classic accents never go out of style, like a light color for the majority of your house with darker accent colors to really make certain details pop — or a darker color with pure white accents.

Designer Shingles

Although gray has always been a popular color for roofs — not to mention that light colors reflect rather than absorb heat better — current trends are those shades that blend in with nature. Muted blues and greens are popular, as well as sand, copper, and (our favorite) merlot.

Another trend is designer shingles. These are asphalt shingles and are thicker and heavier than your typical shingles. They look best on roofs that are quite sloped so that you can see more than just the butt-end of the shingle. Usually they are made to look like slate or wood shake shingles, which gives your roof a more elegant look.

TruDefinition is Owens Corning’s color design platform trademark on shingles, which are created “to capture the bright, vibrant hues and dramatic shades that showcase the aesthetic appeal of your home. Shingles feature multiple-granule colors and shadowing to provide an extraordinary look that will enhance your home and complement its natural surroundings.”

Bold Siding Colors

The current trend for siding colors is to go bold, especially in contrast to the trim accents. Dark colors such as blue, green, merlot or dusty rose with a pure white trim can really make your house pop. Also, classic white siding with contrasting shutters of dark blue or green has become quite popular. Whichever option you choose, keep in mind that your siding should match with the roof.
